Living in the now, 5 steps for being present to ease anxiety and create peace and calm.

And I know it’s hard when you’re falling down
And it’s a long way up when you hit the ground
Get up now, get up, get up now
Waiting on this for a while now
Paying my dues to the dirt
I’ve been waiting to smile
Been holding it in for a while
Take it with me if I can
Been dreaming of this since a child
I’m on top of the world

Life is not a perfectly manicured landscape of sunshine and rainbows. It’s a messy masterpiece, impacted by unexpected storms and unpredictable detours. In this unpredictable world, resilience and grit become the ultimate survival tool.

Resilience isn’t just about bouncing back from setbacks; it’s about embracing adversity as a catalyst for growth. It’s the inner strength that whispers, “I can do this,” when every ounce of your being wants to give up. It’s the invisible armor that allows you to emerge from challenges, not just unscathed, but transformed.

Grit fuels learning and adaptation. When we stumble, we have a choice: wallow in the fall or learn from it. Resilience pushes us to analyze what went wrong, identify the lesson, and adjust our course. This continuous learning allows us to navigate future challenges with increased wisdom and flexibility, paving the way for personal evolution.

At arguably one of the lowest points of my adult life, I was divorced, jobless and close to being homeless, yet I somehow found the grit to keep going until it got easier. I look back at that time with admiration at my transformation.

In the same way resilience helped me grow, it also boosted my self-reliance and confidence. Overcoming obstacles isn’t just about surviving; it’s about proving to ourselves what we’re capable of. This empowered mindset fuels the courage to take risks, chase dreams, and become the architects of our own success.

When I was experiencing life at its worst, it was easy to shift blame to others and I became a pro at finding fault in everyone but myself. Not only was my very lonely pity party detrimental to my healing, I was setting a horrible example for my kids. Once I realized that I needed to be accountable for my situation, I felt a sense of empowerment and began to address each hurdle as they came.

Because it is almost impossible to reach a worthwhile goal without traversing through the messy middle, resilience helps to foster a sense of optimism to get through the worst parts. Resilience doesn’t deny the hardness; it acknowledges it while refusing to be consumed by it. It is the quiet voice that whispers, “you’ve got this.” This optimism allows us to maintain perspective, find a silver lining, and keep moving forward.

Resilience and grit are not fixed traits; they are muscles that can be strengthened. Here are some tips for building your superpower of resilience:

  • Embrace mindfulness: Practice being present in the moment, acknowledging your emotions without judgment. This allows you to gain perspective and be purposeful on how you respond to challenges.
  • Develop healthy coping mechanisms: Exercise, journaling, spending time in nature, and connecting with loved ones can all be healthy ways to manage stress and navigate difficult emotions.
  • Celebrate small wins: Don’t wait for monumental achievements to recognize your progress. Every step forward, however small, is a testament to your resilience.
  • Build a support system: Surround yourself with positive, encouraging people who believe in you and will be there for you during tough times.
  • Be kind to yourself and challenge negative self-talk: The world is hard enough without you being your worst critic. Actively defy your limiting beliefs and replace them with empowering affirmations.

Remember, resilience is not about avoiding challenges or skipping the messy part in the middle; it is about learning from every obstacle you overcome and thriving in the face of adversity.

You’ve got this!
